Valparaíso, Chile is the perfect destination to wander aimlessly, without a specific point of interest. While Valparaíso doesn’t have many distinctive attractions, it is unique in that it has many ascensores, or elevators that act as vertical trams. Because the city is built into so many hills, these elevators make it easy for the locals to get around. The Concepción Elevator is the oldest elevator, and it was constructed in 1883. It still provides visitors with a unique way to see the city.The acesnores are one of the world’s 100 most endangered national treasures.
If you are looking for fantastic local art,visit the Museo de Bellas Artes, which was recently opened after being closed for 15 years. Here you can admire works from European and Chilean artists.

The famous Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, was deeply inspired by Valparaíso. He had his home built nearby in the coastal town of Isla Negra. His home has been remodeled into a museum, where visitors can view his many antiques, masks and writings. The café-bars that pop up nightly are sure to draw artists of all kinds. No bohemian destination would be complete without a lively nightlife. Bar Cinzano, has been a fan of the locals since 1896. Here you can sip on carmenere, Chile’s signature red wine while admiring the tango performers into the wee hours of the night.

In 2003, Valparaíso was established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site– selected for its urban design and unique architecture. If you find yourself in Chile, take the 90 minute bus ride from Santiago to this coastal city. When you arrive, get lost admiring the colorful buildings, graffiti wrapped homes, and gorgeous views. This destination is sure to please anyone who has a love for culture and adventure.
