While visiting Paris for Fashion Week, I met some amazing designers and talented photographers. While out for a run along the banks of the Seine, I found myself surrounded by mesmerizing photographs set up in an open-air art gallery. This gallery, Photoquai, is a biennial photography art show that takes place on the banks of the Seine from September through November.
Photoquai was created in 2007, by the Musee du-Quai Branly, to showcase world images from non-European photographers who have never had their work shown in France. These images reveal views of the world many people would never see otherwise. Below are just some of the breathtaking photographs I saw on my impromptu visit to the gallery.
This year’s theme is “Look at Me.” All of the photographs have to do with the human figure. Landscapes, fashion, objects, or architecture accompany the human figures highlighted in the photos. Just as each year’s theme changes, so does the artistic director. Frank Kalero, founder of Ponctum Magazine was chosen to search for this year’s photographers. About 200 portfolios were reviewed by Frank and his team. In the end, 40 artists were chosen.
Paris never fails to impress when supporting and celebrating the arts! Being so limited on time during this trip, I couldn’t spare a second to make my usual stops into some of my favorite museums and galleries. I am so happy my run took me past little gem. If not, I would have missed this amazing group of artists. If your gypset travel brings you to Paris in the next couple of months, and you have only a limited amount of time, don’t feel badly that you didn’t get to the Jeu de Paume or Louvre, because you never know what is around the next turn!
