Sleeping in a treehouse is about as gypset as you can get and The Tropical Treehouse is an AMAZING eco-resort located in the hills of Rincón, Puerto Rico. These unique tree top homes are located on a 12 acre farm full of bamboo (over 30 species) and fruit trees. The three tree houses (called “hooches”) are actually built from bamboo harvested on the farm. They were constructed by Tropical Treehouse owner, Jo Scheer (a gypset artist/designer).
So, what exactly is a hooch? According to the Tropical Treehouse, a hooch “stands on a single point, and maintains its balance by a web of cables to the surrounding trees.” These sturdy structures rely on the trees, but do not damage them at all. They are in harmony with the surrounding nature while remaining very stable dwellings.
The eco-friendly theme continues beyond the bamboo construction of the tree houses. There are solar panels on site that provide heating for the water and electricity. Each hooch is two stories and features a private bathroom with flush toilet and shower, queen-size bed, kitchenette (with a propane stove), and beautiful ocean views. The hooches have mosquito netting, so you can sleep comfortably at night.
The Luna hooch is available for $110/night, and it is the smallest of the three tree houses. The Sunset hooch is $135/night. It has the best ocean view. The last hooch is the Buddha hooch, and it can be rented for $150/night. This hexagonal dwelling is the largest of the three hooches (twice the size of the Sunset hooch), as its top-level houses the Penthouse Suite. The Penthouse Suite features stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and the surrounding farm. All rates include the Puerto Rico room tax. Rates are per couple–you can add extra guests/beds for a fee.
The Tropical Treehouse is only a five-minute trip into the town for shopping, restaurants, and swimming beaches. If you would like to hit the surfing beaches, it’s about a 15 minute trip. To get to Rincón and the Tropical Treehouse, you can fly into the Aguadilla International Airport (BQN) on JetBlue, Continental, or Spirit Airlines. An easy and affordable getaway (especially for east coasters) makes this a destination a must for those wishing to unwind after the busy holiday season.
