Gypset Lifestyle ~ Boxed Water

Boxed Water is another one of my favorite socially conscious organizations. It launched in 2009 (founded by CEO Benjamin Gott) at the Grand Central Market in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and it’s self-described as “part sustainable water company, part art project, part philanthropic project, and completely curious.” Love it! Since its inception, the company has expanded to 14 different states, in addition to Canada and Australia. Boxed Water provides its product to the popular music festivals Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. You can also find Boxed Water in select Marriott and Hyatt hotels and at the following colleges: Harvard, Amherst, and Hope College.

The impetus behind Boxed Water was to create a more sustainable, environmentally friendly container for storing and shipping water. Since plastic water bottles can take over 1,000 years to degrade and use up to 1.5 million barrels of oil to produce, the water “boxes” are a much better option. Here’s why:

Boxed Water containers are made from 76% renewable materials– trees! The trees used to make the package are sourced from sustainable forests. Raising the trees for packaging also helps to clear our air of carbon dioxide, helping to reduce the impact of CO2 emissions. Paper boxes are also recyclable. Additionally, the water boxes are shipped flat, allowing them to be transported much more efficiently. This reduces the resources need for shipping (significantly less than shipping empty water bottles).

Boxed Water partners with 1% for the Planet to help provide water, reforestation, and environmental protection efforts worldwide. To make Boxed Water as clean and tasty as possible, the company uses carbon filtered water, in addition to reverse osmosis (which removes suspended solids and chemicals like fluoride from the city water).
