When I saw the risqué name of this film and watched the trailer, I knew I had to share it with my Gypsetgirl followers. For those of you who don’t surf it’s important to understand that for surfers, surf movies are like porn. For surfers catching that perfect wave and feeling the power of the ocean beneath your feet as you glide along its glassy face–is like sex. So it’s no wonder why the surf board wax brand Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax got its name and its slogan “The best for your stick.” 😉
The Expencive Porno Movie is a short movie by Tin Ojeda that was shot entirely on 16mm film. Reminiscent of those classics like The Endless Summer, this retro style film focuses on rad surf and is just 45 minutes long. Cast members include Dane Peterson, Kassia Meador, Alex Knost, JJ Wessels, Mikey Detemple, Trevor Gordon, Kyle Albers, Devon Howard, Justin Adams, Scotty Stopnik, Jared Mell, and Ryan Burch.
This unique film mixes surfing footage with “artistic interludes,” and it made its debut (at a surf star-studded premiere) in New York City at the Village East Cinema this past July. Ojeda created Expencive Porno Movie because he was tired of the standard surf film fare–he wanted to creates something that was more artistic in nature.
The film has a definite 70s flair, right down to the soundtrack. Its inspiration lies in the many Blaxploitation films Ojeda watched on YouTube before creating his film. He has said of his inspiration:
…I thought maybe I could put the elements I liked from those films into a surf film. I actually watched a lot of those movies while I was making the film. I was looking at the colors, to try to match the colors I saw in those films. There’s a lot of saturated yellow in them. And I was paying attention to the sounds. In my movie, there are really bad sound effects and they are not matching like they have in those old movies. It’s so bad. But I love it.
So, go ahead and let your inner surfer be inspired–check out the Expencive Porno Movie!
