More and more I hear about how Berlin is “the” place to go to discover everything that is cutting edge in art and music. And if the Berlin Festival is any indication of this, you won’t be disappointed in choosing to visit it for your next gypset travel experience.
The Berlin Festival is held every year in early September, and the 2013 festival (its 8th year) featured musical performers Bjork, the Pet Shop Boys, and Casper, among many others. There were 70 musicians who performed during the two-day event. The after show party allowed guests to continue in the revelry until 4 am.
The 2013 festival took place on many stages at the Templehof Airport (a pre- WWII airport that is now a music and convention venue) in Berlin and Club Xberg, in addition to other locations around the city. Also among the festival events, ticket holders received free entry to 30 clubs throughout Berlin. This festival is so popular it attracts about 20,000 visitors each year!
In addition to the musical stage, the Berlin Festival hosts an artist village which features modern art installations, poetry, a dance arena, and other artistic forays. The poetry salon was hosted by famous German slam poet, Wolf Hogekamp.
The Church of Phonk boasts stained glass art from Various and Gold. The Church also features a painted altar by Nomad and a fresco by Christoph Krönke. Poet completed specially designed murals, and church vestments were decorated by Johannes Buss for the “party arty dictator,” Yaneq, to give a mock sermon on the role of art in today’s world.
In keeping with German tradition, a village pub was constructed next to the Church of Phonk. The pub was constructed from reclaimed wood and other recycled materials, and it was designed by 44 Flavours. The marketplace also made use of recycled furniture and featured a store where patrons could design and make their own bags with reused items. There were also a number of other artisans selling their wares in the marketplace.
The dance place featured 2012 Jury’s Special Prize award winner Quiet in the Corner. When not used for dance performances, the space was turned into Leise Disco (see picture below).
If you are thinking of traveling to Berlin for next year’s festival, they have some unique options for accommodations. Room Surfer is a social sharing service that allows you to locate a roommate, flat mate, or other arrangement for temporary stays in locations around the world.
Tickets for the 2014 Berlin Festival, to be held on September 3rd-6th will be available soon. If you’re interested, check out their website for additional information.
