I love these retro Friendship bracelets I discovered, from the French accessories line Hipanema, on my recent trip to the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. I was so excited to learn that they are available for all of my fellow gypsetters in the United States at The Cools. Hipanema designs are known for blending the vibrant colors of Brazil with unique materials. The end result is stunning ethnic bohemian designs, which are a perfect addition to any gypsetter’s closet.
Hipanema was created when two Parisian girls (Delphine and Jenny), met in Rio. They fell in love with the Brazilian glamour and decided to bring it home with them. It started with the popular Brazilian friendship bracelet and then led to other accessories. Today they have added a ready-to-wear line of clothing called Amenapih. Taking the same approach as Hipanema, the core values of their clothing line are bringing ethnic, colorful, and surprising adventures to their customers.
Designed in France, but born in Brazil, Hipanema uses pearls, shells, different weaves, and vibrant colors in all their handcrafted designs. The stitching on their hats and collars of their clothes are all hand-sewn, proving that attention to detail is something in which they take great pride.
The addition of magnetic safety clasps on their friendship bracelets makes them stand out from the original hand-tied ones that are found in Brazil. This unique feature allows their bracelets to stand the test of time. Each bracelet has a string of ribbon which reads, “Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia (Souvenir of our Lord of a God and of Bahia)“ — a 200 year-old saying that is thought to bring good luck. According to tradition, when the bracelet falls off, three wishes are granted.
