Ossie Clark is famous for his high fashion designs during the 60s. Not only were his designs acknowledged and praised in London, but also in New York and Paris. At the peak of his career, Ossie and partner Alice Pollock owned the exclusive boutique Quorom, which featured his designs.
Ossie was always known for having an eye for the female figure. Since the age of 13, he was absorbing Vogue and Harpers Bazaar magazines given to him by his art teacher. Clark would design bathing suits for the girls in his neighborhood.
Ossie’s designs usually had plunging necklines that were pinned at the waist. Based on his love of dance, Clark believed that clothes should be free-flowing and should not restrict the female figure–similar to many of today’s Gypset styles that you see on the beach in Montauk or Majorca.
After bankruptcy, a divorce, and hard drugs, Ossie Clark turned to a life of Buddhism to help him move on from his past. He completed some small design projects before he was sadly murdered by an ex-lover.
Ossie Clark’s designs have proven to be timeless, as they are still requested by vintage London boutiques. His styles can be seen on the red carpet, and an interpretation of his designs are sold by a website under his name. Clark will forever influence gypset style with his brightly-colored prints and breezy, colorful creations.
