Gypset Travel ~ Kokopelli’s Cave

New Mexico is a great destination area for gypsetters because of its healing vibe and alternative way of thinking. So it’s fitting that you would find the off-the-beaten path Kokopelli’s Cave Bed & Breakfast there. It’s one of the best locations in New Mexico for gypset travel. This groovy B&B brings the gypsetter out of their comfort zone above the earth, and down 70 feet below the surface on a vertical cliff face. The privately owned Kokopelli’s Cave Bed and Breakfast is located in Farmington, New Mexico, 280 feet above the La Plata River in the picturesque San Juan River Valley.

What is so unique about this place is that you literally stay in a cave– a cave that is carved out of a 65-million year old sandstone formation. A night’s stay is reasonable too at $260/night.

This B&B is not the only cool thing about the area; Farmington has a rich history, as the Anasazi settled there in the 7th century and left behind ruins that you can visit today. The cave also has a view of the famous Four Corners–  the name of the only location in the United States where the boundaries of four states (Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico) meet.

The cave also has luxury amenities like a pantry full of food and  and a waterfall shower cascading off a “ruins style”natural stone wall– set with wooden vigas that fill a cozy hot tub in the bathroom.

This getaway is perfect for gypset travel and for those looking to submerse themselves in the Native American culture and learn more about the history of local tribes such as the Apache and Navajo. It is also great for discovering Native American art, jewelry and textiles. But heed the owners warning: the cave is not particularly easy to get to and is only for those who truly want to enter the cave. The entrance includes, and is not limited to, a long walk, a sloping path, many steps, and a ladder. Save the margaritas until after you are safely hibernating!
