There is something about the coastline of Wales that draws you into a bygone era– a much simpler time when farming was abundant and strict Welsh traditions were the mainstay. The charming village of Portmeirion is somewhat of a contradiction– it’s the perfect little gypset enclave. Portmeirion is located in Gwynedd, North Wales and traveling there takes you on a journey all its own. It’s somewhat of a replica of an Italian village, located on a private peninsula on the southern shores of Snowdonia.
Portmeirion is situated in the middle of 70 acres of a sub-tropical woodland oasis. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, a mainly self-taught architect and founder/designer of this village, developed this village to demonstrate that you can build beautiful and colorful housing, without defiling the natural landscape. Upon his death, he sold the village to a foundation he knew would respect his creativity and ingenuity. Having it run by a charitable trust would ensure that its natural beauty would remain unspoiled.
There are three choices when planning an overnight stay in the village. The Hotel Portmeirion, Castell Deudraeth or the Portmeirion Cottages. Each one of these choices combines traditional Welsh design and materials with 21st century technology. For those looking for a more rustic experience, outside of the village there are numerous camp sites that offer stunning views along the water’s edge. TheBlack Sand Rock, which is the closet, has sites for tents and campers and the sandy beach is perfect for swimming, boating and other water sports.
The local food isn’t necessarily typical either. There are options for every palate including French, Thai and Indian food. You don’t want to miss afternoon tea while visiting! The Hotel Portmeirion Restaurant serves an afternoon tea daily at 3 p.m. sharp.
In addition to taking in the natural beauty of the Portmeirion gardens and the beautiful architecture, there are many more options to fill your day. For surfing gypsetters, you can catch a wave at the beach that many say is a true replica of Cornwall or comb the beaches while taking in the views of Bardsey Island. For those who just want to relax and nurture the soul, the Mermaid Day Spa has everything you need to feel pampered with the best local and organic oils and creams.
The gardens, the landscape, the architecture, and the relaxed way of life keep this little village alive with creative inspiration. Writers have written screenplays, television shows, and poems while spending time in Portmeirion. Other famous visitors have include Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul McCartney.
Whether you are a gypsetter on your next adventure or a traveler looking for an out of the box destination, Portmeirion should be your next stop. This village truly has something for everyone.
Thank you for gifting us with Portmeirion. I was mesmerized by the exquisite colors in your photos before going back to read your words. I must visit this paradise with its natural beauty and swirling colors. I even have ideas for colors in my own home on my decorating wishlist… Thank you!
Those photos are beautiful and it amazes me how it seems to be built into its natural lines of nature. Breathtaking!
