To me, there is something extremely mellow and attractive about a destination where most stores don’t open until 3 p.m. everyday. It reflects a healthy approach to living and reflects the warm-hearted, easy-going nature of the people living there. During the laid back morning and early afternoon hours you can find the beaches filled with hippies, gypsetters, artists, and locals soaking up the hot sun and admiring the stunning views.
The aqua marine water and soft sand are not the only attractions that draw people to Trancoso, Brazil. The laid-back charm that made this destination so popular 40 years ago is still present, despite the influx of posh hotels and celebrities. Trancoso resembles the St. Tropez of the 1950’s.
The heart of Trancoso is the town square, Quarado. This 320 meter-long grassy park was founded in 1586 and has remained almost unchanged since then. Surrounding the park are 50 antique fishing cottages, painted in lively and bright colors. In addition to the cottages, you will find an intimate 16th century church– São João Batista Church (which is a UNESCO heritage site).
While the main attraction of Trancoso is its eight pristine beaches, there are many other activities for you to enjoy while visiting. Surfing, wind-sailing, fishing and snorkeling are some of the available water sports. Horseback riding and trekking through the lush forests are another popular activity for those who enjoy adventure.
For the less adventurous visitor, dancing and the many restaurants and bars in Trancoso may better suit your needs. Or better yet, really embrace the culture and take a cooking class from one of the locals, so you can bring home amazing memories, a new skill, and a real attachment to the Brazilian culture.
While there are many options for accommodations in Trancoso, the UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa is by far the most popular. Four of the original fishing cottages located on the town square have been renovated and incorporated into the hotel. It blends rustic charm with contemporary elements that fuse indoor and outdoor living. Wilbert Das, a jet-setting former fashion designer (for the Italian label Diesel) is the mastermind behind the hotel. On a vacation to Trancoso, he was drawn to the magic of the village and could never leave.
If you are already planning a trip to Trancoso, the tropical climate makes it a great destination for any time of the year. However, the Christmas holidays are the busiest. Try and travel during their off-peak season to enjoy the silence and splendor of Trancoso.
