Tulum has always been a go to spot for gypset travel, and after a business trip in Cancun I knew I needed to escape and just kick-back and disconnect. Zamas Resort was the perfect solution for my Gypsetgirl needs. In laid-back Tulum, Zamas is a 20 room beachfront retreat perfect for anyone seeking a barefoot vacation. Located near the ancient Mayan ruins, this hotel lacks (on purpose) many technological advances, forcing you to soak up the pure magic of this place.
Each cabana is unique– the size, layout, and occupancy is different in each unit. What is the same throughout is the rustic-chic ambiance. There is even a larger 2 story bungalow to accommodate groups of up to 10 people. Only a small path separates you from the water’s edge. This eco-friendly hotel has no air conditioning, telephones, or televisions. Although Zamas would prefer for their visitors to fully “disconnect” during their stay, there is Wifi available in the main house (it is spotty at times). While there is no air conditioning, beds are cooled by fans placed inside the mosquito nets over the beds. Because of its remoteness, water is solar-heated and electricity is wind-generated.
Visiting Tulum wouldn’t be complete without a trip to one of the Mayan ruins. About 50 feet from shore off the private beach, snorkel around a real-life shipwreck. Continue on a bit more, and you will reach the coral reef (the second largest in the world). You can also rent one of the hotel’s kayaks or bicycles or lounge all day by the water in a Mexican hammock.
Be sure to enjoy a meal at the hotel’s open-air restaurant ¡Qué Fresco! The menu is full of Mexican and Mayan flavors and meals are made from locally grown food. Fish and lobster are their specialty, but even locals come for the delicious thin-crust pizza. Enjoy a margarita and some fresh charred pepper salsa while watching the sun set over the water.
Zamas is committed to providing you with an experience, not just a roof over your head. “Zama” is the original name of the Mayan city Tulum, and it means “new beginning.” I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this place is where one would go to rejuvenate, relax, and rediscover. Come to a place where remoteness is praised and it’s beauty is natural. Experience your “new beginning” at Zamas!
