On Our Compass ~ Surfing in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Toes in soft black sand, board in hand, bag packed lightly with the essentials, such as six bikinis, Peruvian poncho, kimono, white linen pants, mineral sunscreen, coconut oil, camera with a long lens, journal, a great love story by Tolstoy, and a bottle of Mt. Gay rum to share, enough food for two dinners, two lunches, and two breakfasts, and a totally stoked attitude– you are ready to board the Moonstone, a luxurious 62-foot catamaran chariot that will be your home for your next forty-eight hour epic surf adventure to El Parque Nacional Santa Rosa in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

It is the mezzo of an Indian summer; the wind will stay offshore and the waves will continue to pump. It is a beautifully strange August. The land displays every possible shade of green, but there is no rain in sight. You are about to enter a sacred wave park. Once aboard the Moonstone, Captain Judd and his crew of two will provide you with five-star services to match the five-star accommodations.

You set sail at sunset and travel into shooting stars above your head and bioluminescent plankton trailing at the hulls. The salty air captures your happiness; it dances around you and whips through your hair. A deep slumber in a queen sized, white linen bed and air-conditioned room is just what you need to prepare for tomorrow. The lapping lullaby of the sea puts you to sleep.

The crew has papaya, watermelon, and pineapple cut up, and coffee ready at daybreak. You wake naturally as soft sunlight enters your starboard cabin windows. It is time to surf…fruit, coffee, water, sunscreen, wax, and go! The next two days will be filled with waves, between back and forth trips to Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point. Witch’s Rock is riddled with lefts, rights, and perfect barrels as far as the eyes can see, in both directions.

You can almost always find your own peak. Ollie’s Point is a long, shred-happy right over coal black sand, which can hold some very manageable size. There are even some secret spots that will get your blood pumping; they are home to some pristine coral reefs, which you can see as you race down the line. It is a surfer’s utopia. Not to mention, you will most likely be blessed by the presence of humpback whales, dolphins, and acrobatic stingrays. The park is alive, and bursting with prehistoric beauty.

You will be well-fed, hydrated, and cared for while you get to truly let go and relish this special adventure. Vrinda, the sweet Venezuelan former competing surfer/crew member, makes some of the best smoothies and cocktails; and she won’t let you lift a finger! This is only one of the endless overnight trips you can plan aboard the Moonstone for up to eight people (if everyone wants their own bed).

Spending time in the Santa Rosa National Park will change you, in the best possible way. It is a place to live in the now, and to return to in the future.
