Located on the Pacific coast of El Salvador, you will find two hidden gems: Playa El Tunco and El Sunzal. Both are loved by many for their laid-back lifestyles and outstanding surf. They attract surfers off all abilities from all over the world. In addition to the surfing, this area is a dream come true for any adventure traveler. Rock climbing, hiking, swimming, and kitesurfing are just some of the year-round outdoor sports and activities that are available, and don’t forget sunbathing!
El Salvador has two seasons, and both are conducive to surfing. The rainy season lasts from May-October. During this time, surfers see the largest and most consistent swells, with the average wave height between 8′ and 12′. The dry season is from November-April. During the dry season, off-shore winds are perfect for consistent mid-high surf. The year-round water temperature of 80-85 degrees is ideal for surfing.
Surrounded by mountains, El Tunco and El Sunzal provide amazing scenery for surfers, sunbathers and spectators. The area is known for its spectacular sunrises. If you opt to surf, boards are easy and affordable to rent. Most boards are available for under $10/day. Surf lessons are also very affordable. You can choose a private or group lesson for under $20.
In El Tunco and El Sunzal, surfing is not just a hobby, it’s a religion. You will often find locals surfing the local breaks at 5 a.m. If you love to surf and enjoy a laid-back atmosphere, then a trip to this area of El Salvador is a must.
